Farlington Painting Group Exhibition January 2013

The Farlington Painters are a group of mature students learning experimental landscape and portrait painting under the tutorage of Rosalyn Sprey (Mina).

Together for just over three years, the group will be exhibiting for the first time, in January 2013, at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham, West Sussex.

All artists featured in this blog will be exhibiting along with Laurie Korpez and Margaret Cornwell.

I took up painting around 15 months ago after years of thinking about it… I wish I’d done it sooner.
Joining the class has allowed me to explore many different techniques and given me the confidence to paint portraits. My work is of a loose and expressive nature and relatively large scale.

This time last year I was persuaded by my daughter Emma, who is studying Art at A Level with Rosalyn, to join the landscape class. Although I am creative and work with fabrics, I hadn't painted for about 30 years since leaving school. Between them, Rosalyn and Emma have given me the confidence to try something new. I now really enjoy going to the classes and painting at home with Emma. I am now looking forward to trying portraits in the New Year.

Being a furniture designer and craftsman, sketching and drawing makes up a large part of what I do, albeit very specific, often technical and tightly controlled. Picking up a paint brush for the first time two years ago in Rosalyn's evening class was a revelation. I wanted to 'free up'! Today I like to paint big and bold, and quickly - particularly portraits. It's a fascinating and difficult process which I find totally absorbing and a constant challenge!

I have always enjoyed craft, art and creativity but my work was totally untutored until my children reached their teens. I then studied at Northbrook College, Horsham, for 3 years, dipping into glass, ceramics and painting. I loved it all! I have sold a few seascapes and commissioned work, as well as displayed work in a local café. I have painted murals for several clients, some in a local historic manor house.

Portraiture has long been a subject I wanted to tackle and, although my natural style tends toward realism, Ros has helped to unlock a whole new approach which is more spontaneous and liberating. I go home exhausted and exhilarated from each class and working with all the other talented people in the group is an inspiration.

Paintings of my two grandchildren

I really liked art at scool but felt I lacked imagination and never took it any further...

During my adult life I have always enjoyed making things and have drawn from time to time but apart from attending an evening watercolour class painting flowers many years ago, I had not really painted before. Three years ago I saw an advert for Ros's art class in the local paper and thought I would give it a go. The class is really friendly and Ros is an amazing teacher. She always seems able to show me how to convert my mistakes into 'happy accidents' and make my attempt at art look ok.

I attend the class on Wednesday and the two hours just fly by. I love the countryside and enjoy painting landscapes the best, although I like to experiment too. Art is a great way to relax.

As a water colour painter I was anxious to extend my range especially into acrylics and oils. Rosalyn's course has answered that desire perfectly and I am gaining in experience and confidence.

Coming from an architectural design background, art classes have allowed me to explore another side of myself which I was unaware existed. I am constantly full of ideas and painting has released this from within. Finding Ros was my inspiration to investigate new media and experiment with my art.

I am currently working on a large portrait which has pushed me to explore scale where previously my default has been detail and precision.

Like most people, I first picked up a paintbrush when I was young and enjoyed art at school but never considered taking it further than that. Evening class beckoned and I joined a History of Art class at Farlington which I found inspirational. My interest in art had truly begun. I started going to exhibitions and gallerys and really looking at art in a different way. When I heard about an evening class teaching portrait and landscape painting with Ros, I had to join up.

My trade is in landscape gardening and design so I have always been interested in colours and textures but I had never painted with oil on canvas until now. I am working towards learning different techniques and hope that I can become looser and more imaginative in my style; I think Jenny Saville is wonderful.

I have enjoyed drawing and painting since my schooldays and throughout different times in my life. It takes me into another world, relaxing and demanding at the same time. When I found out that Rosalyn Mina was teaching painting classes I decided to take up my old hobby again. As I am particularly drawn to painting and drawing people, and faces, I joined her portrait class in 2011. Ros is a wonderful teacher and turns her class into an exciting experience.

My grandchildren have been my inspiration for my work.

Although having drawn and enjoyed making things when I was young, I did not take up painting until my mid-thirties. With a busy career I have found that painting can provide balance on a number of levels; to both calm the mind and also to ask it to think in different ways. Our teacher Ros helps us explores things within ourselves that we didn't know were there. Her skill is to guide; helping us create great work out of what sometimes, at first, feels directionless. This is the beauty of painting; you can create something out of nothing.

My main areas of practice are drawing and painting. My current circumstances are allowing me to develop my skills and push myself to a higher level. My pieces in this exhibition reflect my work towards this goal. In conjunction with this I am also interested in the landscape. I am enjoying working on landscape pieces whilst exploring and experimenting with new techniques. I find most inspiration working outside where I feel part of the landscape itself. I am looking forward to seeing where my journey takes me.

Currently studying a degree in Fine Art. I have always had the desire to paint and the fact that I am now able to put this into practice in the course of my study is a very exciting prospect . I am currently working on the theme of Landscape and enjoy working from an experimental approach. Throughout my work I have always felt a connection with textures and layers and I also find the idea of deconstruction and reconfiguration very exciting. Energy and motion also play an important part in the re-shaping of my work and I feel it is important to visit the places I paint in order to experience the atmosphere and feel the elements. I am then able to include these sensations in my work producing a physical and emotional response.

Having spent the greater part of my working life in teaching I now thoroughly enjoy the role of learner in our evening class. Rosalyn's encouragement gave me the confidence to tackle portraits and I have found the process totally absorbing - in fact, I'm hooked!

I have always enjoyed arts and crafts of various sorts and after retiring had the opportunity to complete an art degree at Chichester University. It was exhilerating, tiring and quite a challenge at that stage of my life. I am now once more able to enjoy the more relaxed and playful aspects of art. We have a very friendly and talented group of people in the class and Ros encourages all her students to push boundaries and experiment using new methods and materials - with some amazing results.
